Artist’s Statement:
My content is driven by memory, accumulated reference materials and my own interaction with the paints and inks. I am not interested as the 18th century Henry Fuseli said “in the mere delineation of fact” – I do not pursue the reproduction of landscape as a
plein air painter, but rather; I design the constituents with a priority upon the essential unity of the artwork and its ability to cohere as a single entity. Among the other constituents, I am moved by atmosphere, light, the effects of gesture, and color. I will control the color with limited palettes to maximize tonal and value effects. But, my affection for color has me trying varieties of palettes among different pieces. My use of oil inks and oil paints affects my color usage. I enjoy the range of texture, viscosity, and the malleability of oil paints, especially their receptivity to blending and shading. In further consideration of pictorial content, I consider the design components such as the trees, not simply as observed natural matter, but as synonyms for dancers moving across a stage.
